The Cerberus Project

Limitations within the Film World:

Proprietary Content

The overarching goal of the project is to convert Sony 4K footage in realtime with no proprietary or GUI software required. Due to the way that SONY saves images captured with the FS700 in 4K, the images themselves and in their RAW form is stored in a proprietary, encrypted format. This requires that the user make use of a SONY provided software tool to undo the encryption.

This feature alone breaks the overarching goal of the project.

It has been determined and agreed upon to bypass this as part of the project with advisor approval. As a result, the program with take in the RAWest forms of the images provided by the user and process from that point. Sony's RAW Viewer application can be used to export images with no manipulations made, so those images will be considered the RAWest form of the images.

Breaking this encryption on SONY recorded MXF container files is not only a breach of camera EULA but also very difficult and currently not feasible for a project rooted in academic honesty and ethical execution. This is a specific detail that shines to prove that the final system is a proof-of-concept engineering prototype only - it's implementation grows more difficult as modern DRM becomes more widely used and harder to bypass on a lower level.
